Who was Nelson Mandela?

I remember back in school in Social Studies and history classes when I had an assignment that involved reading about about this great human being. I remember that as I read about him something in me saw something very unique in this human being and was that he fought for the freedom of others. And no matter the struggles he went through, he still fought for his nation.

Rolihlahla Mandela was born into the Madiba clan in Mvezo, Transkei, on July 18, 1918, to Nonqaphi Nosekeni and Nkosi Mphakanyiswa Gadla Mandela, principal counsellor to the Acting King of the Thembu people, Jongintaba Dalindyebo. nelsonmandela.org

Why was Nelson Mandela Imprisoned?

Imprisoned for nearly three decades for his fight against white minority rule, Mandela emerged determined to use his prestige and charisma to bring down apartheid while avoiding a civil war.
"The time for the healing of the wounds has come. The moment to bridge the chasms that divide us has come," Mandela said in his acceptance speech on becoming South Africa's first black president in 1994.

"We have, at last, achieved our political emancipation."

For from Barack Obama according to Chicago Tribune News:

"Today he's gone home, and we've lost one of the most influential, courageous and profoundly good human beings that any of us will share time with on this earth," Obama said. Chicago Tribune News.

P.S. I just personally want to say thanks to this great human being for caring about others like he did, on Earth. Thanks for being an example of a great human being that cared more about others than him.
