Effective Listening Skills
Intro
Hi everyone in this presentation I’m going to talk about the importance of having effective listening skills. For many years I’ve been working in call centers or jobs that involve taking calls. In those jobs I’ve learned that in order to help a customer with a technical problem or simply answer a question, I had to have effective listening skills that would help me find out what the problem is and then compare the problem or inquiry with a solution that I experienced from other calls. Effective listening is not only a good thing in jobs, but in life. Even when I played baseball in pitcher position I had to have good listening skills in order to catch a call from my pitching coach. As a business owner, I believe that having effective listening skills helps people be good leaders and successful in life. Below I will explain why.
Details
Effective listening skills can prevent conflicts between individuals or even groups. “Effective listening tends to reduce the frequency of interpersonal conflicts and increases the likelihood that when conflicts emerge they will be resolved with a “win-win” solution”. (Wright State University). Effective listening makes you a good leader. When you listen to people you manage or people that follows you, you can clearly understand what makes them motivated and that way you can know what kind of things they value as rewards for a well done job.
Good listening also means good relationship build up. When you’re a good listener friends and people value you more because you show that you care and that you’re concerned if they are informing you of a problem. Another thing about effective listening is that it helps you provide feedback to speakers and that way you can show them that the message has been received.
Conclusion
A good way to show a speaker that you are actively listening to what is being spoken is by reflecting, which is paraphrasing back what they said. In general, effective listening is actively absorbing the information being sent to you by the encoder, speaker, or sender. So in conclusion, I believe that without effective listening skills, most people would fail as leaders and as successful people. For example, if you owned a grocery store and customers came to you complaining about a bad product or service provided and you didn’t care or just didn’t bother in listening to what they have to say, you will definitely lose that customer and the word would spread about how selfish you are as an owner and how you don’t care about the customers that are buying from you. Eventually you will have a bad reputation and people will no longer see you as a leader. So active listening is very important in all aspects of life. It defines you as a leader and as a person that cares about what others say and not just being selfish.
